[ SOLVED ] NVIDIA graphics card problem with ubuntu 9.04

If you upgrade ubuntu to 9.04, and you cannot open compiz and can not install virtualbox-2.2.
Moreover, you cannot activate in NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver ( when I am writting is version 880 ) in "Hardware Drivers".

The machine told you that the version is not match. When you use "uname -r" in terminal, insteading of getting "2.6.28-11-generic", that is a correct version, you got "2.6.27-11-generic" that is an older version.

If you have the problem, I mentioned above you may face a problem like me, and here is the solution.

The problem is very simple.
When you were upgrading your machine, ubuntu ask you to overwrite menu.lst but you did not do so.
Therefore, in /boot/grub/menu.lst, you still boot from 2.6.27.11-generic that is used by ubuntu 8.10.

Be careful, when you are playing with "menu.lst". You may backup your "menu.lst" by executing,
$ sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.bak

Now you can edit menu.lst. Just duplicate two paragraph "Ubuntu kernel 2.6.27-11-generic" and "Ubuntu kernel 2.6.28-11-generic (recovery mode)" and change to "2.6.28-11-generic". You may make your grub menu look better, by changing version number from 8.10 to 9.04.

That's it. The recommendation above I got from here.

After doing that, you can install virtualbox-2.2, since you are using the right kernel.

Now, I face another problem, when I try to execute "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run" that I got from NVIDIA site, to install NVIDIA driver. It has an error in "/var/log/nvidia-installer.log" that "version.h" is missing. The error is shown below.

ERROR: The kernel header file
'/lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/build/include/linux/version.h' does not
exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source files
in '/lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/build' have not been configured.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

I look at that folder, and cannot find that file.

The solution is reinstalling "linux-headers-2.6.8.11-generic 2.6.28-11.42". You can see from the log below that NVIDIA is installed and version.h is appear in the right place.

Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.28-11-generic

nvidia (180.44)...
nvidia (180.44): Installation module.
...........
......
...done.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/nvidia-common

Now you can activate driver and open compiz.
